How Can I Communicate Better with My Divorce Attorney?

Lawyers are very busy people. We often handle many clients and multiple cases at the same time. As a result, sometimes communicating with your attorney can be frustrating. But it’s important to remember communication is a two-way street and there are many things that you can do on your end to improve communication between you and your attorney.

Listed below are five excellent ways to improve communication with your divorce lawyer:

  • Discuss the best contact method. There are a variety of ways to communicate these days. Email, phone calls, texts, fax, in-person meetings — the list goes on. Save time by discussing what method your attorney prefers from the very beginning.
  • Take notes. It is important to write down questions so that they don’t slip your mind, and so you can discuss them all at the same time, rather than constantly firing questions at your attorney one at a time. Also, take notes during your meetings so that you can refer to them later.
  • Be honest. Your lawyer is under a legal obligation not to disclose anything you tell him, so there is absolutely no reason not to be completely honest. Failing to disclose something because you are embarrassed can come back to haunt you later in your case.
  • Ask questions. The legal process can be complicated and confusing for many people. When you don’t understand something, ask your attorney to explain.
  • Meet with your attorney. Email and phone calls are fine, but it helps to have regular face-to-face meetings with your attorney.

While keeping these methods of communication in mind is essential to maintaining a good lawyer-client relationship, it is just as important that you choose your lawyer wisely. Contact an experienced divorce lawyer today for a consultation.
