How Can I Protect My Kids During a Divorce?

If you are a parent going through a divorce you should do everything in your power to comfort and protect your children from some of the uglier aspects of the divorce process. Kids can be easily frightened and emotionally traumatized. So it is especially important to communicate with them throughout these tough times. Be affectionate and make sure your kids know the divorce has nothing to do with them. Although you cannot expect a divorce to have no impact on your children, there are steps you can take to make it easier on them.

Here are a few tips to help ease the burden of divorce on your children:

  • Do not expose your children to fighting. If you must fight and argue with your spouse during a divorce, keep it away from your children and never bring them into the disagreement. Children should not feel like they have to choose sides.
  • Try to keep patterns the same. Although a divorce is sure to create changes in everyone’s lives, children need a sense of consistency and stability. If you can, try to keep your kids in the same school and house for as long as possible so that changes don’t occur suddenly and disrupt their entire lives.
  • Spend time with them. This is the most important thing you can do with your kids during a divorce. Spend as much time with them as you can, talk with them about what is happening and assure them that you and your spouse are not abandoning them.

It may help to speak with a Houston family lawyer who has experience dealing with divorce and can recommend further steps for you and your spouse to take involving your children.
